When you’re asked to implement a system, and you _know_ that you’ll be reinventing the wheel if you write your own from scratch, be sure that when you’re searching for existing solutions, you search for the _right_bloody_thing_. When your boss asks you to design a system to inventory everything in the office/lab, extrapolate that out to mean that he wants to track assets, not actually inventory things. The difference is quite large, and after spending almost 45 days beating my head into a bloody pulp alternating between writing my own solution and finding an existing inventory system, I just happened to search for “php asset tracking” today and as usual the first hit was the only one I needed. Doh!
Used servers are expensive…was just pricing some on Ebay and a old Dell PowerEdge 1800 or 2800 is going for more than what I can get a new 1950 or 2950 for at Dell.com with the deals they run week to week.
The next time any of you fair readers hears me mention that I’m taking on another job, without actually quitting or cutting back on the several i currently have, reach through my cable modem and slap the shit out of me.
